Nobody woke up one Tuesday and decided “hmm..today looks like a great day to get hooked on cocaine”.
We are all one spiked drink or pain pill away from being addicted.
Remember that shit.
Yes, thank you. This. This. This.
All the white people shenanigans surrounding Whitney Houston’s passing have only underscored that we have serious bigotry and hatred in the U.S. for those who are dealing with substance abuse/addiction issues, especially if they’re not white and/or not men.
Addiction is not a moral failing or a sign that a person is worthless and needs to be discarded. The rhetoric around drugs (aimed mostly at hurting minority communities) has vilified people who need help, not harsh treatment.
Keep in mind that so many people are self-medicating with supposedly “illegal” drugs because pain management and mental health services that could help them are out of their reach.
In the U.S., there are far too many places where, frankly, it’s cheaper and more immediately effective to get your hands on drugs than to be able to walk into a doctor’s office and get treatment, especially if you’re uninsured, in pain, and overwhelmed as well as having been shown just how disinterested and actively harmful the health care system will be towards you.
Yup. It’s also a really common way for people to deal with horrible life circumstances like living in an abusive environment or being homeless.
People who talk shit about addicts can fuck right off.
