I’m reblogging this post which was reblogged from me because I literally just had a conversation with a friend about my forays into escapist literature and certain kinds of romance novels and how ‘typical’ it all was and how I was apparently less of an intellectual for rereading juvenile/YA books or paperback fantasy escapism or heaven forbid! a sexy beach read.
Look, I spend about 85 % of my reading time studying Serious Shit. I read about conflict, war, famine, death, eliminationism, weapons stockpiling, historical events, religious interpretation, nuclear war, drone strikes, gendered violence, etc. I sometimes just want to read something purely for pleasure or for entertainment or for non-critical analysis or for complete shutting off of all of the parts of my brain that deal with aforementioned Serious Shit. See, I read for two reasons
1. to learn, to be educated, to internalize and gain information and perspective
2. for entertainment and joy and mindless fun
and number two is not subordinate to number one or vice versa.
So if my intellectual credentials are ruined forever because I read The Sexy Scottish Lord And The Heaving Bosom Beauty the day after my 30 page research paper on the political climates of Central Asia was due, I’m perfectly okay with that
And attempts to make me feel stupid for what I read in the ‘off season’ are pointless, from here on out.
