i'm all about music and books: my last.fm and my goodreads
my others blogs: style/beauty and books
initially, i thought it was a person of color doing the “white privilege” tumblr that i’ve been seeing posted everywhere, so i took down my original post on it, cuz i just didn’t have time to dedicate to tumblr to making sure nobody (i.e. white folks) misstook what i was saying or otherwise jumped on white privilege person or did the relentless ask box thing to me—
but now that i know it’s a white person who is doing the tumblr, i just want to say again:
the only “white privilege” i think white folks really have is not knowing that everybody in the world doesn’t have lives like them.
everything else is either white supremacy or the manifestations of white supremacy.
example: some white guy didn’t get into a good college because he magically was born to people who were white and living in a good neighborhood with good schools.
he got into that good college because *white supremacy* created good neighborhoods with good schools and *segregated* non-white people from those areas in such a way that they couldn’t be a part of them. *white supremacy* denied non-white folks access to those schools and neighborhoods. the manifestations of white supremacy (i.e. the good job you have because you went to a good school and lived in a good neighborhood and allows you to continue living in a good neighborhood with good schools) allow those schools and neighborhoods to continue to exist.
it’s a privilege to not know that your pay check is a social sorting tool that follows the rules of segregation—it’s NOT a privilege to be living in a good neighborhood and going to good schools. THOSE things are the by products of white supremacy.
also—feeling “guilty” for having privilege is kinda the most worthless feeling in the world. *anger* because there are people going hungry and are forced in areas that are *literally* killing them based solely on the color of their skin is a much more useful feeling.
it teaches white folks how to have compassion for people they’ve been trained to not even think of as humans.
and it brings the focus back where it belongs.
🙏🙌🙏🙌 that is all.
